Sfîntul Dimitrie a fost al unsprezecelea Episcop al Alexandriei, de la Sfîntul Apostol şi Evanghelist Marcu. El bine şi înţelept a păstorit turma lui Hristos din Alexandria, vreme de treizeci şi trei de ani lungi şi rodnici, din 189 şi pînă la 231, după Hristos. In această vreme el a primit scrisori cu cereri din India, şi 1-a trimis acolo pe Sfîntul Pantaenus, conducătorul vestitei şcoli catehetice de la Alexandria, spre a predica Sfînta Evanghelie acelui popor. Cu ocazia acestei călătorii misionare în India a aflat Sfîntul Pantaenus Evanghelia de la Matei, scrisă în aramaică.
