La început Măria a fost cu rînduiala citeaţă a Psaltirii în Biserica învierii din Ierusalim. Dar ea era foarte frumoasă la chip şi mulţi se ispiteau de frumuseţea chipului ei cu necuratele gînduri de curvie. Pentru aceasta, ca să nu mai smintească oamenii păcătoşi cu frumuseţea ei, Măria a plecat şi s-a ascuns în pustia Souka, luînd cu ea numai un coş cu boabe de păstăi şi un vas de lut plin cu apă. Sfînta Măria Palestiniana a vieţuit în acea pustie timp de optsprezece ani. Prin Purtarea de Grijă a lui Dumnezeu, nici boabele din coş nu i s-au sfîrşit, nici apa din vasul de lut. Ucenicii Sfîntului Chiriac au aflat-o pe ea încă din timpul vieţii ei, iar după fericitul ei sfîrşit au îngropat-o.
