Sfîntul Pavel a trăit în lume ca bărbat căsătorit pînă la vîrsta de şaizeci de ani. Dar aflîndu-şi soţia în adulter, el a părăsit şi a lepădat toate şi a mers în pustie la Sfîntul Antonie cel Mare, primind de la el tunderea în îngerescul chip. Sfîntul Pavel a fost bărbat foarte simplu şi neştiutor de carte, dar în ciuda simplităţii lui el a ajuns la înălţimi duhovniceşti atît de mari încît vedea sufletele oamenilor aşa cum alţii îşi văd unii altora feţele trupeşti. El a fost mare făcător de minuni, uneori întrecîndu-1 în acestea chiar şi pe Marele Antonie. Sfîntul Pavel s-a săvîrşit la bătrîneţi foarte adînci, la anul 340, şi s-a strămutat la locaşurile bucuriei, şezînd cu sfinţii îngeri.
