La început Isihie s-a lenevit de mîntuirea sufletului lui, şi după aceea s-a îmbolnăvit şi a murit. Dar a înviat din morţi şi şi-a redobîndit sănătatea. Faptul acesta 1-a transformat total. El s-a zăvorit într-o chilie de la Sfîntul Munte Athos, şi nu a mai vorbit cu nimeni timp de doisprezece ani. Mai înaintea morţii lui, monahii au deschis chilia şi 1-au rugat să le dea cuvînt de povăţuire. El doar a zis: «Cel care are pururea moartea înaintea ochilor nu poate păcătui." De la acest Sfînt Isihie s-a întemeiat numita trăire isihastă, care pune mare accent pe linişte, pe tăcerea buzelor şi gîndurilor, pe multă rugăciune interioară [a minţii, sau inimii] şi pe cugetări dumnezeieşti, toate acestea fiind socotite [pe drept cuvînt] lucrarea de căpetenie a monahului. A existat chiar un schit isihast la Sfîntul Munte Athos. Se spune că Sfîntul Grigorie Theologul a practicat isihasmul în timpul Sfintelor şi Marilor Posturi. Sfîntul Isihie s-a nevoit şi s-a săvîrşit în veacul al şaselea.
