Sfîntul Cosma se trăgea dintr-o familie nobilă din Bulgaria. Cînd părinţii lui au voit să-1 însoare, Sfîntul Cosma s-a refugiat la Muntele Athos. El a fost sihastru şi mare făcător de minuni. El s-a nevoit cu toate nevoinţele pustniceşti într-o peşteră de lîngă Mînăstirea Zografu. Preasfînta Născătoare de Dumnezeu s-a arătat lui, nu numai o dată. El este cunoscut ca cel mai mare ascet şi făcător de minuni dintre Părinţii zografiţi. Vestita chilie în care s-a nevoit în tăcere Sfîntul Cosma, biruind acolo toate căpeteniile diavoleşti există şi astăzi, în partea de nord-vest a Sfintei Mînăstiri Zografu. Fiind plin de harul Duhului Sfînt al străvederii, el a arătat evenimente de la mari depărtări de timp şi spaţiu. El a adormit întru bătrîneti adînci, în douăzeci şi două de zile ale lunii septembrie din anul 1323, strămutîndu-se, după o viaţă plină de lupte duhovniceşti încununate de biruinţă, la cereştile locaşuri ale bucuriei Domnului Hristos.
