Ambii s-au născut la Lychia, şi au fost prieteni buni din copilărie. Crescînd cu vîrsta, amîndoi au iubit învăţătura sfîntă şi sfinta vieţuire, şi s-au închinat din toată inima lor slujirii lui Dumnezeu: Ipatie s-a făcut monah şi a îmbrăţişat asprele nevoinţe, iar Andrei sa făcut slujitor al Cuvîntului la turma cea cuvîntătoare a lui Hristos. Din pricina marii lui virtuţi, Sfintul Ipatie a fost ridicat în scaunul episcopal al cetăţii Efes. Andrei, la rîndul lui, din diacon a fost sfinţit preot. Amîndoi au luat mucenicesca moarte sub domnia împăratului iconoclast [luptător împotriva sfintelor icoane] Leon Isaurul. După ce au fost torturaţi bestial, ei au fost decapitaţi la anul 730, strămutîndu-se de la această viaţă deşartă la cereasca împărăţie.
