Cneazul Mihail al Cernigovului a fost nevoit să intre, într-o misiune diplomatică de pace, în hoarda tătară condusă de Hanul Bătu. El a fost însoţit pe acest drum de Boierul Theodor. Dar cum cei doi au refuzat să se supună ritualului păgînesc de a trece prin foc şi a se închina la idoli mai înainte ca să fie primiţi la Han, ei au fost omorîţi prin decapitare. Acestea s-au întîmplat la anul 1244. Sfintele lor moaşte, care dau mărturie de moartea lor pentru Hristos, se odihnesc în Biserica Sfintului Arhanghel Mihail din Moscova.
