Sfîntul Nil a fost un mare nevoitor ce a trăit printre cei de neam grec din Calabria. El a întemeiat mai multe mînăstiri, a fost mare făcător de minuni, şi fierbinte apărător al purităţii Credinţei Ortodoxe. El a întreprins o călătorie foarte lungă ca să salveze un om de la o pedeapsă foarte grea. El a iubit cu dragoste dumnezeiască pe aproaple, după poruncă, şi s-a odihnit în Domnul la anul 1005. Sfîntul Nil a lăsat în urma lui mulţi ucenici vrednici, între care s-a aflat şi vestitul Sfînt Bartolomeu, scriitor de multe canoane, care s-a săvîrşit către Domnul la anul 1044.
