El a fost un mare nevoitor egiptean, care a vieţuit în veacul al patrulea. El timp de şaizeci de ani a petrecut întru toate nevoinţele pustniceşti, într-o peşteră din Tebaida. El s-a făcut vestit prin neobişnuita lui dragoste de oameni, întru care a strălucit şi cu minunile. Ziua el zidea chilii pentru fraţii ce veneau să se sălăşluiască în apropiere, iar noaptea o petrecea în lucrul mîinilor, întru neîncetată rugăciune şi psalmodie.
