Sfîntul Ciprian acesta s-a născut la Târnovo, şi a vieţuit multă vreme la Muntele Athos.46 Nevoinţa lui era mai ales aceea de a recopia şi traduce cărţi sfinte. El s-a făcut astfel ucenic al lui Filotheos, Patriarhul Constantinopolului. Cînd Patriarhul a ajuns să îl cunoască pe Ciprian la Sfîntul Munte Athos, el 1-a cerut în slujba lui, iar mai apoi 1-a uns şi 1-a trimis să fie Mitropolit al Kievului. Ca Mitropolit al Kievului Sfîntul Ciprian a avut parte de multe dureri şi suferinţe, pe care le-a îndurat cu bunătate şi cu răbdare. Aceste nevoinţe ale lui au adus multă roadă, şi au folosit mult Biserica Rusă. El a păstorit Biserica kieveană timp de aproape treizeci de ani. Mai înainte de moartea lui, el a scris un cuvînt de despărţire, care a fost citit la mormîntul lui. El s-a săvîrşit către Domnul în şaisprezece zile ale lunii septembrie, din anul 1406. Sfintele lui moaşte făcătoare de minuni se odihnesc în Biserica Adormirii de la Moscova.
