Maxim a fost fiul despotului sîrb Stefan si al despinei Angelina. El s-a tuns monah în Mînastirea Manasia. Fortat de turci, el a scapat în România, unde a fost sfintit episcop pentru Arhiepiscopia Valahiei, atunci vacanta. El a mijlocit pace între domnii Radu si Bogdan, evitînd razboiul dintre ei. In anii dinspre sfîrsitul vietii el s-a întors la Krusedol unde a zidit o mînastire în care a si raposat, dupa o viata întreaga de nevointe, la 18 ianuarie 1546. Sfintele sale moaste întregi si facatoare de minuni se afla si acum în aceasta mînastire.
