El a fost preot, şi a fost ridicat la treapta arhierească, ca Episcop al Novgorodului, la 1163. în timpul vieţii lui el a înălţat şapte biserici. El a văzut-o în vedenie pe Preasfînta Născătoare de Dumnezeu, şi a căpătat mari puteri asupra diavolilor, pe care i-a şi silit să-1 slujească. El a salvat minunat Novgorodul de atacul a şaptezeci şi două de căpetenii inamice. El a suferit cumplite ispite din partea diavolilor, dar le-a biruit pe toate cu puterea Sfintei Cruci şi cu rugăciune multă. La vîrstă înaintată ajungînd, el s-a retras la o mînăstire, îmbrăcînd sfinta şi marea schimă. El s-a săvîrşit cu pace către Domnul, în şapte zile ale lunii septembrie, din anul 1185.
