Cînd împăratul Traian bătea război în părţile răsăritului, el a poruncit odată un recensămînt al oştenilor lui, exclusiv al celor creştini. S-a descoperit atunci că se află unsprezece mii de soldaţi creştini în armata imperială a Romei, împăratul atunci a poruncit ca ei să fie scoşi din armată şi exilaţi în Armenia. Sfîntul Romulus era intendentul palatului imperial. El a mers înaintea împăratului şi 1-a certat pentru aceasta, declarînd că şi el este creştin, împăratul a poruncit decapitarea lui. La porunca împăratului, dintre cele unsprezece mii de soldaţi exilaţi, zece mii au fost răstigniţi. Ceilalţi o mie au fost ucişi în torturi bestiale.
