în tinereţile lui, Sfîntul Irineu a fost şi el tînăr ucenic al Sfîntului Polycarp Ucenicul Sfinţilor Apostoli. Sfîntul Irineu a fost trimis şi el, ca şi Sfîntul Pothinus mai sus pomenit, de către Sfîntul Policarp în Galia ca să predice acolo Sfînta Evanghelie. Sfîntul Irineu a fost instalat în scaunul Lyonului după mucenicia Sfîntului Pothinus. în sfînta lui mulţime de scrieri, Sfîntul Irineu a formulat Credinţa Creştină Ortodoxă, apărînd-o de răstălmăcirile ereticilor. Sfîntul Irineu a fost martirizat pentru Hristos de către împăratul Sever, la anul 202. împreună cu el au fost ucişi nouăsprezece mii de creştini.
