Sfîntul Pothinus a fost trimis din Asia Mică la Lugdunum de către Sfîntul Polycarp, ca să predice Sfinta Evanghelie în Galia. Sfintul Pothinus a fost primul Episcop al Lyonului, care a întors mulţime de păgîni la creştinism, în timpul prigoanelor împotriva creştinilor din anul 177, Pothinus a fost adus înaintea tribunalului, mai bine zis, a fost purtat pe mîini, din pricină că era în vîrstă de nouăzeci de ani, şi cu trupul slab. Proconsulul 1-a întrebat: „Cine este Dumnezeul Creştinilor?" Bătrînul Pothinus i-a răspuns: „De vei fi vrednic, vei afla." Păgînii din anturajul proconsulului au început atunci să arunce cu pietre în el şi să-1 lovescă cu ciomege, apoi 1-au apucat pe sfintul bătrîn şi 1-au bătut fără milă. Apoi 1-au aruncat în temniţă, unde Sfîntul a murit după două zile, din pricina bătăilor. El a luat cununa muceniciei cea de negrăită slavă, şi s-a strămutat la locaşurile cereşti ale Domnului Dumnezeu lisus Hristos Cel Iubit.
