Sfîntul Avraam s-a nascut dupa trup în cetatea Rusiei Smolensk, ca raspuns la rugaciunile aduse de parintii lui catre Dumnezeu. El a intrat de foarte tînar în cinul monahal si s-a dat apoi pe sine celor mai aspre vietuiri, iubind si rîvnind dupa viata Parintilor pustnici celor din vechime. Dupa vreme el a întemeiat Mînastirea cu hramul Sfintei Cruci de lînga Smolensk. El a îndurat multe ispite de la draci si de la oamneni, cu blîndete, rabdare, si multumind lui Dumnezeu, în timpul unei secete cumplite, Sfîntul Preacuvios Avraam a facut sa ploua, cu sfintele lui rugaciuni catre Domnul. Vietuind vreme de cincizeci de ani întru îngerescul chip, Sfîntul Preacuvios Avraam s-a savîrsit cu pace catre Domnul, cam pe la anul 1220.
