Acest mare ierarh a fost de neam sîrb. El a dus o viata a tuturor neovointelor la Sfîntul Munte, fiind staret al Mînastirii Hilandar. Dupa moartea lui Sava al IlI-lea, el a fost ridicat arhiepiscop „al tuturor Sîrbilor si al tinuturilor de la mare," la anul 1317. Nicodim 1-a uns rege pe Milutin în anul 1321. El a tradus Tipicul de la Ierusalim în limba sîrba. în introducerea la aceasta carte, Sfîntul Nicodim scrie: „Domnul Cel Atotputernic, Cela Ce cunoaste slabiciunile noastre, ne va da noua tarie duhovniceasca, dar numai daca venim si noi mai întîi cu ale noastre nevointe." El a iubit cu sinceritate nevointele monahale, sîrguindu-se întru ele si întru întarirea lor în toate tinuturile sîrbesti. El a lucrat fara încetare pentru stîrpirea ereziei bogomile si pentru întarirea Ortodoxiei. El s-a odihnit întru Domnul la anul 1325. Sfintele sale moaste facatoare de minuni odihnesc în mînastirea de la Peci.
