Ioan a fost episcop în Georgia, dar atunci cînd Hanul tatar al Georgiei a început sai schingiuiasca pe crestini, timp de patru ani el a plecat ca sa locuiasca printre gotii din Basarabia de astazi. Dioceza gotilor se întemeiase în timpul împaratului Constantin cel Mare. Auzind de moartea Hanului, Ioan s-a reîntors în Georgia si sia pastorit turma cu rîvna si cu dragoste de Dumnezeu, înaintea mortii, el a spus: „Peste patruzeci de zile voi sta la judecata cu hanul tatar," adica, murind, Ioan va ajunge înaintea tronului lui Dumnezeu. Asa s-a si întîmplat: în a patruzecea zi episcopul Ioan a murit si s-a înfatisat înaintea Domnului. El a adormit cu pace în veacul al optulea.
