Sfantul Pahomie s-a nascut in Tebaida de Jos (Egipt) si a trait in timpul imparatului Constantin cel Mare (306-337). Ca soldat a luptat in armata imparatului Constantin, in faimoasa batalie impotriva lui Maxentiu. In vremea aceea era pagan. Primeste Botezul si se retrage in pustia Tebaidei, alaturi de pustnicul Palamon. Dupa zece ani de nevointe ajunge in Tabenisi, unde un inger i s-a infatisat inainte imbracat in rasa de schimonah si i-a daruit o tablita pe care se afla inscrisa pravila unei manastiri cu viata de obste. Acest inger i-a poruncit sa intemeieze o astfel de manastire chiar in Tabenisi. Zideste multe chilii, si prin lucrarea Sfantului Duh ele vor ajunge sa fie locuite de monahi.
