în timpul domniei împaratului Adrian, care a fost între anii 117 si 138 dupa Hristos, un pagîn pe nume Catullus i-a cumparat ca sclavi pe Hesperus, pe sotia lui Zoi, si pe fiii lor Chiriac si Teodul. Cum ei erau crestini neclintiti în credinta, ei nu voiau niciodata sa guste nimic din cele jertfite idolilor, iar cînd li se dadea mîncare din aceasta, ei o aruncau cîinilor si preferau sa îndure de foame. Aflînd despre acestea, Catullus s-a umplut de furie si a început sa îi tortureze cu cruzime. Mai întîi a luat la schingiuit copiii, dar acestia au ramas neclintiti în Credinta lor cea de la minunatii lor parinti primita, si ce e mai mult, îl provocau chiar pe tortionar sa îi supuna la si mai mari chinuri. La sfîrsit toti patru au fost aruncati într-un cuptor în care, multumind Domnului, si-au dat sufletele în mîna Lui. Trupurile lor au ramas întregi, nearse de flacarile focului.
