Acest Stefan a fost ucenicul Sfîntului Teodosie de la Mînastirea Lavrei Pesterilor din Kiev. El a fost un timp Staret al Lavrei Pesterilor, nevoindu-se mult cu organizarea si asezarea în buna rînduiala a vietii si pravilelor monahale, si cu împodobirea sfintelor locasuri. Dupa acestea, dracii i-au instigat pe fratii mînastirii sa-i faca multe rautati acestui sfînt Stefan; nu numai ca 1-au alungat din staretie, dar 1-au alungat si din mînastire. Dar Domnul Cel Carele nu da sufletele dreptilor multa vreme spre batjocura nelegiuitilor ci le izbaveste din gheara cîinilor, astfel a calauzit viata acestui sfînt si cuvios Stefan, încît 1-a ridicat pe el Episcop în Vladimir. Ca ierarh al lui Dumnezeu, Stefan a pastorit Biserica Lui pîna la batrînete adînca, odihnindu-se cu pace în Domnul la anul 1094.
