Acest nou sfînt mucenic Lazar era de neam bulgar, din tinutul Gabrovo. El de tînar si-a parasit locul natal si s-a stramutat în Anatolia. Acolo el s-a facut pastor de oi în satul Soma. Crestin fiind, Lazar a stîrnit ura turcilor împotriva sa, fiind aruncat în închisoare de un anume agha. Dupa torturi prelungite si salbatice din partea unor oameni care erau mai mult fiare decît oameni, chinuri pe care Lazar le-a îndurat cu eroism datorita iubirii lui fierbinti pentru Stapînul Hristos, acest tînar mucenic a fost omorît în ziua de 23 aprilie a anului 1802, pe cînd era în vîrsta de douazeci si opt de ani. Dumnezeu 1-a primit pe noul mucenic Lazar în locasurile Sale cele ceresti, proslavindu-1 si în ceruri si pe pamînt, caci la sfintele lui moaste au avut loc nenumarate minuni.
