Acest sfînt loan a fost un zavorit din Mînastirea Sfîntului Antonie de la Pesterile Kievene. Pe el 1-au chinuit timp de treizeci de ani patimile cele trupesti, pîna cînd le-a biruit pe ele, cu nevointele aspre, cu mila lui Dumnezeu, si cu aceea ca s-a atins de sfintele moaste ale Sfîntului Moise Ungurul (pomenit la 26 iulie). Facînduse biruitor asupra necuratelor patimi, Sîntul loan s-a umplut înlauntru de lumina cereasca negraita, prin care el se calauzea în timpul noptii ca si cînd ar fi umblat pe zi.
