Sfintii Paisie si Isaia au fost frati, fii ai unor parinti foarte bogati, si amîndoi s-au facut monahi. Unul s-a sfintit din pricina nevointelor lui în pustie, iar celalalt din pricina milosteniilor pe care pururea le-a facut oamenilor. Sfîntul Pamvo i-a vazut pe amîndoi salasluiti în Rai. Acest fapt a stîrnit o disputa între monahi, privitoare la întrebarea: Ce este mai bine? Sa-ti robesti trupul într-o viata de asceza aspra în pustie, sau sa practici faptele milosteniei celei trupesti? Avva Pamvo a zis: Amîndoua îl duc pe om la Rai, daca sînt lucrate întru numele lui Hristos.
