Helius a fost un monah ce a trait în veacul al patrulea, si era de neam egiptean, înca din frageda lui tinerete el s-a închinat vietii nevointelor monahicesti în pustie. El uimea si monahi si mireni cu modul lui de viata si cu puternicele minuni pe care le lucra cu harul lui Dumnezeu. Desi fugea de slava oamenilor, acestia îl cautau mereu. El s-a luptat mult cu înselaciunile si vicleniile diavolilor, mai cu seama în vremea asprelor postiri. Uneori dracii îi puneau înainte miere, alteori mere alese, dar Helius nu îsi îngaduia niciodata sa se lase înselat. El vedea tainele din inimile oamenilor, le citea patimile si gîndurile, aceasta nu ca sa dea pe fata cunoasterea lui cea înalta, ci ca sa vindece greselile oamenilor.
