Sfîntul Nectarie s-a nascut la Vriulla, în Asia Mica. La vîrsta de saptesprezece ani el a fost silit sa treaca la islam. Soarta lui a fost similara celei a Sfîntului Nicodim care se praznuieste tot în aceasta zi. Cînd el s-a înfatisat înaintea maicii lui îmbracat ca un musulman, ea a strigat: „Departeaza-te de la mine, caci nu te mai cunosc! Eu crestin te-am nascut si te-am crescut pe tine, iar nu musulman!" Tînarul a plîns cu amar si a plecat la Sfîntul Munte Athos. Acolo, la Schitul Sfînta Ana, el a depus voturile monahale. Hotarînd sa-si spele pacatul cu propriul lui sînge, el s-a întors la Vriulla, unde a marturisit si a luat mucenicia. El a fost taiat pentru Hristos de catre turci în chiar locul nasterii lui, la 11 iulie 1820, pe cînd împlinise douazeci si unu de ani.
