Sfîntul Nicodim s-a nascut la Elbasan [astazi în Albania] si a fost barbat însurat si tata de copii, înselat de turci, el a trecut la Islam, fortîndu-i si pe copiii lui sa faca la fel, cu exceptia unuia singur, care scapînd, s-a refugiat la Muntele Athos, unde s-a tuns monah. Nicodim si-a urmarit fiul la Muntele Athos, dar intrînd în Sfîntul Munte, sufletul lui s-a schimbat, el s-a pocait cu amar de pacatul lui si s-a întors la Sfînta Credinta a lui Hristos primind, ca si fiul, cumplita cadere prin mucenicie sîngeroasa, tunderea în monahism. Timp de trei ani si-a plîns cumplita cadere, pîna cînd la urma a hotarît sa se întoarca în Albania si sa-si spele pacatul la locul la care 1-a savîrsit. Astfel, el si-a împlinit dorirea si a marturisit pe fata ca este crestin înaintea adunarii turcilor, care pentru aceasta i-au taiat capul, la 11 iulie 1722. Pîna astazi sfintele lui moaste au ramas întregi, nestricate, si facatoare de minuni.
