Acest sfînt a fost un nobil din Constantinopol si mare comandant de osti în vremea împaratului Nichifor (802-811). într-un razboi cu bulgarii împaratul a fost ucis, iar acest Petru, împreuna cu cincizeci de generali si nobili greci au fost luati prizonieri. Intr-un chip minunat, Sfîntul loan Teologul 1-a eliberat pe Petru din acea temnita. Vazînd aceasta mare minune, Petru a dispretuit toata slava cea lumeasca si s-a retras la Muntele Olimp unde, sub povatuirea Sfîntului loanichie cel Mare, s-a nevoit întru viata pustniceasca timp de treizeci si patru de ani. Dupa moartea sotiei si fiului lui, el s-a stramutat la Constantinopol unde a mai vietuit înca opt ani întru post si rugaciunie. El dupa aceea, la 865, a adormit întru Domnul, aflîndu-se întru al saptezeci si saptelea an al vietii lui pe pamînt.
