Sfântul Anatolie a fost mai întîi presbiter [preot] în Biserica Alexandriei, iar dupa moartea Sfântului Patriarh Flavian, el a fost ridicat în scaunul patriarhal al Constantinopolului, la anul 449. In timpul arhipastoririi lui, scaunul constantinopolitan a fost ridicat la aceeasi cinste cu scaunul Romei, la Sinodul Ecumenic al Patrulea de la Calcedon, din anul 451. Sfîntul Patriarh Anatolie a luptat mult penru curatia Credintei Ortodoxe si a luat suferinte cumplite din mîna ereticilor, pîna la uciderea de catre ei, la anul 458, în timpul împaratului Leon cel Mare. Sfântul Anatolie bine a pastorit Biserica Constantinopolitana timp de aproape noua ani, stramutîndu-se la locasurile cele ceresti, printre Sfintitii Ierarhi din împaratia Cerurilor.
