Acesta, din invidie fata de episcopul si întîistatatorul lui, si-a dat sufletul diavolului si s-a lepadat si în scris de Domnul Hristos si Preacurata Lui Maica. Dar mai tîrziu el s-a pocait cu amar si a plîns timp de patruzeci de zile cu post si cu rugaciune la Maica Domnului ca sa se primeasca pocainta lui; drept pentru care Maica nu doar ca i-a primit-o, dar si hîrtia pe care scrisese lepadarea de Hristos înaintea i-a pus-o; iar cu aceasta hîrtie Teofil a alergat la sfînta biserica, unde înaintea episcopului si a tot poporul a marturisit cu umilinta si cu glas mare faradelegea lui, cerînd si a lor iertare. Cînd Episcopul a pronuntat cuvintele de dezlegare si i-a dat lui Teofil Sfintele Taine, fata lui a stralucit ca soarele. Iata aici exemplu minunat de marea milostivire a lui Dumnezeu, care nu doar ca iarta pacatele celor care se pocaiesc cu adevarat, dar si cu harul sfinteniei îi îmbraca!
