Cînd hanul tatar Ahmet a asediat Moscova, Cneazul Ivan Vasilievici s-a pornit cu ostire sa apere cetatea. Si chiar daca armata cneazului era mai mica si mai slaba decît cea a hanului tatar, ea a iesit biruitoare. Caci fara veste a cazut asupra tatarilor o spaima napraznica, care i-a mînat la ruga în dezordine, calcîndu-se unii pe altii. Toti au pus aceasta nemaiauzita victorie pe seama Sfintei Icoane a Maicii Domnului, la care îngenunchease tot poporul ca sa-i scape Maica Domnului de urgia salbaticilor tatari. Auzindu-le ruga, Maica Domnului i-a mîntuit, iar poporul a însemnat aceasta zi, a douazeci si treia din luna iunie, cînd s-a întîmplat minunea, ca sarbatoare de-a pururea a Bisericii Ruse.
