Damaschin s-a nevoit în Mînastirea Hilandar din Sf. Munte Athos, careia i-a fost si staret. Cînd el a cautat sa obtina de la niste turci plata unei datorii pe care acestia o aveau catre mînastrie, turcii au trimis o femeie musulmana în casa în care locuia Damaschin. Apoi pe neasteptate au intrat si turcii acolo si aflînd-o pe femeie 1-au tîrît pe Damaschin în fata cadiului care i-a propus una din doua: ori sa fie spînzurat ori sa se converteasca la Islam. La aceasta Damaschin a raspuns cu hotarîre: „As fi nebun sa-mi cumpar chinurile vesnice cu aceasta viata trecatoare." El a fost spînzurat în anul 1771, la Svistov. Asa si-a sacrificat Damaschin trupul, pentru a-si mîntui sufletul. Pedeapsa lui Dumnezeu i-a nimerit în curînd pe ucigasii lui. Ei sau înecat în Dunare în timpul unei furtuni groaznice care le-a rasturnat corabia.
