Sfantul Cuvios Teodosie cel Mare a trait in perioada secolelor V-VI. S-a nascut in satul Mogarisos din tinutul Capadociei, in estul Turciei de astazi. Tatal sau se numea Proeresie si mama sa Evloghia, si erau amandoi credinciosi si cucernici. Intra de tanar in monahism, la o manastire din Ierusalim. Dupa ce petrece alaturi de pustnicul Longhin, se retrage intr-o pestera din apropierea Bethleemului, unde timp de 50 de ani s-a hranit doar cu ierburi salbatice si legume. Datorita vietii sale, aduna in jurul sau multi ucenici. Va ridica o manastire langa pestera in care vietuia, unde va pune bazele vietii monahale de obste. De aici si supranumele de "incepator al vietii de obste“. Sfantul Cuvios Teodosie cel Mare a trecut la cele vesnice in jurul anului 529.
