Sfîntul Marcu este cunoscut prin marele sau curaj cu care a aparat Ortodoxia la Sinodul de la Florenta (1439 d. Hr.), în ciuda opozitiei împaratului si Papei. El a adormit cu pace la anul 1452. Pe patul de moarte, Marcu 1-a rugat cu lacrimi pe Grigorie, ucenicul sau, care mai tîrziu avea sa fie stralucitul Patriarh Ghenadie, sa se pazeasca de capcanele Apusului si sa apere pîna la capat Ortodoxia.
