Sfîntul Agaton a fost un mare nevoitor egiptean din veacul al cincilea, care a dus o viata extrem de aspra. El a fost contemporanul Sfîntului Macarie si ucenic al Sfîntului Lot, si el egiptean. El lucra pururea straduindu-se sa împlineasca întocmai poruncile Domnului nostru. Unul din frati i-a laudat odata un cutitas pe care îl avea, si pe care îl folosea la taierea mladitelor din care împletea cosuri. Auzind aceasta, Sfîntul Agathon cu bucurie i-a dat fratelui cutitasul în dar. Sfîntul Agaton a mai zis: «Bucuros as fi sa iau eu asupra mea trupul unui lepros, iar lui, sa i-1 dau pe al meu». Oare nu este aceasta iubire desavîrsita ?
