Sfîntul Paisie a fost egumenul Mînastirii Travna de lînga Ceaceak, din Serbia, iar Sfîntul Avacum a fost prietenul si diaconul lui. Crestini fiind, ei au fost amîndoi trasi în teapa de catre turci, pe dealul Kalemegdan din Belgrad, în saptesprezece zile ale lunii decembrie, din anul 1814. Ducîndu-si teapa în spate pe strazile Belgradului, Fericitul Avacum cînta cîntare de biruinta lui Dumnezeu. Implorîndu-1 mama lui cu lacrimi sa accepte islamul ca sa-si scape viata, acest atlet al lui Hristos i-a raspuns:
