El a fost un barbat foarte nobil si bogat, guvernatorul insulei Nivertum de lînga Cadiz, în Spania. Vazînd desertaciunea acestei lumi, el a renuntat la toate demnitatile, onorurile si bogatia, a venit la Roma si s-a tuns monah. Dupa aceasta, el a mers la Constantinopol unde vorbit cu împaratii Constantin si Roman Porfirogenetii, iar apoi a pornit catre Ierusalim. La Ierusalim a primit sfînta si marea schima din mîinile Patriarhului Hristodul, care i-a dat numele de Stefan. Torturat de sarazini, care îl fortau sa îsi tunda barba, el s-a retras dupa aceea în Egipt unde, îmbolnavindu-se de pe urma multor torturi îndurate pentru Numele lui Hristos, s-a savîrsit catre Domnul. El s-a stramutat la fericitele locasuri ale împaratiei Ceresti la sfirsitul veacului al zecelea.
