El s-a nascut la Babilon, în vremea robiei babiloniene a poporului lui Israel. El a fost din tribul lui Levi si a prorocit cam cu patru sute saptezeci de ani mai înainte de Hristos. Tînar fiind, el a mers si a cercetat Ierusalimul. El i-a îndemnat cu rîvna pe Zorobabel si pe losua preotul sa înnoiasca Templul Domnului de la Ierusalim, prorocind ca noul Templu va avea o slava mai mare decît a avut slavitul Templu zidit de Solomon: „Si slava acestui templu de pe urma va fi mai mare decît a celui dintii", zice Domnul Savaot (Agheu 2: 9), aceasta pentru ca însusi Domnul si Mîntuitorul Hristos avea sa intre în acest înnoit Templu. Sfîntul Proroc Agheu a trait destul încît sa vada savîrsirea unei parti din Templul ridicat de Zorobabel. El s-a savîrsit la adînci batrînete si s-a adaugat lînga stramosii lui.
