El a locuit la Constantinopol în vremea împaratului Constantin Porfirogenetul. Soldat fiind, a luptat în rîndurile armatelor grecesti într-un cumplit razboi contra bulgarilor, în care a fost martorul mortii a mii de oameni, dar razboi din care el a scapat ca prin minune viu si nevatamat. Vazînd în izbavirea lui de moarte degetul lui Dumnezeu, Sfintul Luca a lepadat îndata dupa aceea toata desertaciunea acestei lumi, s-a facut monah si a urcat pe un stîlp de lînga Calcedon. Acolo el a trait întru aspre nevointe vreme de patruzeci si cinci de ani, curatindu-si inima de toate gîndurile si patimile sufletesti si trupesti. Placîndu-i desavîrsit lui Dumnezeu, el s-a savîrsit catre Dînsul cam între anii 970 si 980, mutîndu-se la locasurile vietii celei mai bune.
