Ea a fost sotia lui Elcana din Ramataim Tofim, adica Arimateea (I Regi 1: 1-2). Ana fiind stearpa nu putea avea copii, si din aceasta pricina plîngea cu amar înaintea lui Dumnezeu. Dar Domnul Atotmilostivul a cautat cu milostivire asupra ei si a ridicat de la ea sterpciunea, vazînd plînsul, zdrobirea si rugaciunea inimii ei. Ana de aceea 1-a nascut pe fiul Samuel si 1-a închinat de mic Domnului pentru totdeauna, asa cum si fagaduise mai înainte. Iar Samuel s-a facut povatuitor mare poporului lui Israel si proroc, ungînd poporului doi regi, pe Saul si pe David. Sfînta Ana maica prorocului Samuel a cîntat o cîntare de slava si de biruinta lui Dumnezeu, un imn minunat întru frumusetea si întelepciunea cuvintelor, care si astazi se cînta la Slujbele Sfintei Biserici (I Regi 2:1).
