Sfîntul Nil a fost lucrator al pamîntului, nascut în marele Novgorod. Dar el s-a retras la pustie, unde s-a hranit numai cu ierburi. Povatuit fiind de un glas de sus, el s-a salasluit în insula Stolbensk. Odata în chilia lui au navalit niste tîlhari cu gînd de jefuire, dar de îndata ce au pasit înauntru au orbit. El si-a sapat siesi groapa de mormînt în apropierea chiliei si a plîns asupra ei în fiecare zi. Sfîntul Nil s-a odihnit cu pace si s-a stramutat la împaratia vesnica a lui Hristos la anul 1554.
