Papa Leon I este unul dintre sfintii Bisericii nedespartite ai primului mileniu crestin, pe care ii regasim in Calendarul Ortodox. Leon s-a nascut in Italia intr-o familie crestina. Ajungand arhidiacon al Papei Sixt al III-lea, dupa moartea acestuia, Leon a fost numit Papa al Romei. Papa Leon I a fost cel care a salvat orasul de la distrugere, atunci cand Attila si hunii sai s-au apropiat de Roma. Sfantul, intampinandu-i imbracat in vesmintele arhieresti, a reusit sa negocieze cu Attila, facandu-l sa se retraga.
