Acest barbat sfînt s-a savîrsit catre Domnul dupa o viata lunga de nevointe aspre sihastresti si a fost îmbaiat, îmbracat si pregatit de sfînta înmormîntare de catre fratii lui duhovnicesti. Sfîntul Athanasie era mort de doua zile cînd deodata s-a întors la viata. Cînd au venit ca sa îi faca rînduiala înmormîntarii, fratii 1-au aflat sezînd si plîngînd, viu, iar nu mort, asa cum îl lasasera. Dupa învierea lui din morti Sfîntul Athanasie a intrat într-o chilie de unde nu a mai iesti timp de doisprezece ani, pîna la moartea lui, timp în care nu a mai vorbit cu nimeni si a trait numai cu pîine si apa. El s-a savîrsit catre Domnul la anul 1176.
