Sfîntul Flavian a fost Patriarh al Constantinopolului dupa Sfîntul Proclu. El a fost contemporanul Sfîntului Leon Papa Romei, si a luptat si el cu hotarîre contra ereziei lui Eutihie si Dioscor. Dar el nu a mai trait sa vada si triumful Ortodoxiei de la Sinodul al Patrulea Ecumenic de la Calcedon din anul 451, pentru ca înainte de acela, la sinodul nelegiuit de la Efes din 431, el a fost batut cu salbaticie si calcat în picioare, de unde, dupa trei zile, i s-a tras si moartea. Flavian a fost un mare ostas al împaratului Hristos, si viteaz aparator si marturisitor al Ortodoxiei.
