Sfîntul Proroc Avdie s-a născut în satul Betharam din ţinutul Sichem. El a locuit la curtea Regelui Ahav, dar cînd regele s-a întors de la dreapta credinţă şi s-a dus să se închine idolilor, Sfîntul Prore Avdie nu s-a luat după rege, ci a continuat să se închine la Adevăratul Unul Dumnezeu. Pornind necurata Izabela, soţia regelui, prigoana împotriva prorocilor Adevăratului Dumnezeu din pricina urii ei faţă de Marele Proroc Ilie, Avdie a strîns pe o sută din aceşti proroci şi i-a ascuns în două peşteri deosebite, unde le-a trimis de mîncare din avutul lui pe toată vremea prigoanei (III Regi 18:4). Contemporan fiind al Marelui Proroc Ilie, sfîntul proroc Avdie 1-a cinstit cu veneraţie şi i-a slujit lui în toate, ca urmaş şi ucenic al lui. Sfîntul proroc Avdie a trăit cu nouă sute de ani mai înainte de Mîntuitorul şi s-a săvîrşit cu pace.
