El a fost fiul cneazului Yaroslav. Din copilărie inima lui a fost îndreptată către Dumnezeu. El i-a biruit pe suedezi la rîul Neva, în bătălia din 15 iulie 1240, şi de atunci a fost numit „Nevsky" [„de la Neva"]. Atunci s-au arătat Sfinţii Boris şi Gleb unuia dintre comandanţii lui Alexandru, care erau şi rudenii cu el, şi au făgăduit ajutorul lor marelui cneaz. Odată, aflîndu-se în mijlocul tătarilor Hoardei de Aur, el a refuzat să se închine idolilor lor şi să treacă prin foc. Datorită marii lui înţelepciuni, a formidabilei lui forţe fizice şi a marii lui frumuseţi, pînă şi Hanul Tătar îl respecta. Alexandru Nevsky a zidit multe biserici şi a lucrat nenumărate fapte de milostenie, întru această zi, 23 noiembrie, se prăznuieşte mutarea sfintelor lui moaşte în cetatea Vladimir.
