El s-a numit „Xanthopol" după chilia cu acelaşi nume din Sfîntul Munte Athos, unde s-a nevoit vreme îndelungată alături de fratele lui duhovnicesc, Ignatie. Cu acelaşi Ignatie, Sfîntul Calist a scris cele o sută de capete despre isihie, ziditoare pentru cei ce le citesc cu luare aminte, fiind rodul cercării şi trăirii personale întru duh de nevoinţă, smerenie şi rugăciune. Lucrarea aceasta este una dintre cele mai însemnate din toată literatura ascetică. Asupra Sfîntului Calist a avut o înrîurire covîrşitoare Sfîntul Grigorie Sinaitul, căruia i-a scris şi Viaţa. Fiind înălţat Patriarh al Constantinopolului, Sfîntul Calist s-a îmbolnăvit şi s-a săvîrşit către Domnul pe cînd se afla într-o călătorie spre Serbia. Mai înainte de a intreprinde această călătorie lui i s-a prorocit timpul ieşirii din viaţa aceasta de către Sfîntul Maxim Kapsokalivitul de la Sfîntul Munte Athos.
