Sfîntul Menignu s-a născut în Hellespont. El cu îndeletnicirea a fost nălbitor de in, din care pricină s-a numit „Piuarul". în vremea împăratului Decius el a rupt decretul imperial prin care se poruncea şi se declanşa prigonirea creştinilor. De aceea a fost aruncat în temniţă unde însuşi Domnul a venit la el şi 1-a întărit, zicîndu-i: Nu te teme, căci Eu cu tine sînt. în acea clipă lanţurile întemniţatului sau topit ca ceara, temniţa s-a deschis singură, iar Menignu a ieşit afară. El a fost arestat din nou şi judecat. Ei 1-au torturat bestial, tăindu-i degetele de la mîini şi de la picioare, iar la urmă i-au tăiat capul. Noaptea, capul mucenicului a strălucit ca o făclie aprinsă.
