Противник на унијата со Рим, наспроти неговиот претходник Јован Векка (1275 г. – 1282 г.). Од детството беше аскет и молитвеник. Беше омилен кај народот, а заради својата морална строгост го предизивика негодувањето на некои свештеници. Се повлече во неговиот манастир на гората Ган, каде што се подвизуваше уште построго од порано. Му се јави Самиот Господ Исус Христос и благо го укори зашто им го остави стадото на волците. Кога го прорече денот на земјотресот во Цариград, царот Андроник повторно го врати на патријаршискиот престол и против неговата волја. Но потоа тој повторно тајно се оддалечи на подвиг. Се упокои во стотата година од животот. Беше чудотворец и проѕорливец.
