Некои мислат дека овој голем светител по потекол бил од балканските Словени. Во времето на царот Никифор Никола беше војвода и заповедаше над еден дел од војската којашто тргна во војна против Бугарите. Патем Никола ноќеваше во една крчма во којашто имаше големо искушение и сонуваше чуден сон. Во војната, во којашто Грците беа сосем поразени од Бугарите во 811 година, тој сон наполно се обвистини. Никола се спаси, па од благодарност кон Божјата Промисла го остави војничкиот чин и се замонаши. Се подвизуваше долго време и толку се восоврши со подвигот, што стана голем Божји угодник и проѕорливец. Се упокои мирно и се пресели во блаженото Царство на Господ Христос во 11 век.
